A woman is fighting for life in hospital after allegedly being struck by a reversing car in the CBD. 

She was crossing Flinders Street shortly before 10am on Thursday when she was hit by a dark coloured Mazda.

The male driver, 33  was arrested at the scene and was taken to Melbourne West police station where he’s being questioned by detectives.

The pedestrian suffered life threatening injuries and was rushed to Royal Melbourne Hospital in a critical condition.

Police believe the driver reversed 25-30metres before hitting the woman.

‘The driver of a Mazda CX-5 was reversing down Flinders Street and struck a pedestrian crossing the road,’ Detective Sergeant Peter Romanis told reporters at the scene.

‘As to the reason why he was reversing, it is currently unknown. We haven’t been able to ascertain the reason why.We are hoping he might be able to shed some light on that.’

The driver has undergone drug and alcohol testing. 

A crime scene was set up with Major Collision Investigation Unit detectives launching  an investigation.

The collision sparked traffic chaos in the CBD with Flinders Street closed eastbound between King and William streets.

Tram services were also disrupted with commuters warned to expect delays as services resumed ahead of the afternoon peak.

Police renewed warnings for all road users to be vigilant.

Victoria’s pedestrian road death toll for 2022 currently stands at 17, more than double at the same time last year.

‘The trend is heading up and we don’t want to see that trend continue,’ Det Sgt Romanis said.

‘We urge all road users to be aware, and particularly for motorists to be paying attention to vulnerable road users as they navigate their way around the city.’
